Hi,
Having said that, you should get a proper over all health check up done by a doctor to diagnose properly the underlying cause behind these symptoms. That would also ensure that his past habit of excessive drinking and smoking has not affected badly any of his internal organs.

Hi,
It is nice to hear that your friend has decided to stop drinking and smoking and is able to implement the decision on his own.
While the symptoms described may be due to diabetes and needs to be checked for, it is more likely due to ' alcoholic neuropathy ' you can Google and get more details. While it may take some time for health improvement, it basically involves taking balanced food, doing exercises and taking certain B vitamins which are found deficient in people who have been drinking  more for years. I hope, now that he has overcome the most difficult part of the treatment - to completely stop smoking and drinking - other things would improve in due course with your support and changes in life style.
