Please Help. Worried about mom

My mom suffered a stroke in 2000.  She has also suffered from migranes since she was 7 years old, diagnosed by Dr.  She was 47 when she had the stroke and was found to have carotoid stenosis of 99% in her right carotoid artery.  The Dr. said this was extremely rare for her age group.  Well, after the stroke, many years after, she sometimes just stares for about 5 seconds repeating a word than quickly comes out of it.  Sometimes her speech has become slurred.  She has had CT scans which just show 2 old lesions from the stroke.  On Wednesday she did the same, for about 3 seconds she had a blank look and repeated words, she came out of it fine.  Since then, she has had a major headache and migrane.  What scared me is that yesterday during the migrane, her upper body was jerking.  Not to much just at time her head and shoulder seemed to twitch.  Can this be from the stroke lesions or from her actual migranes?

Hi,
I was was having similiar symptoms like your mom last month (I am 44) and I went to the ER and was diagnosed with migraines.  I would get a blank stare, then shake, and lose speech (actually stutter), and get a headache behind my eyes and the top of my head only during the attacks.  I knew what was going on the whole time, but could not control it.  They would last 3-5 minutes.  they thought I was having a stroke, but they did all the regular test and everything was clear.  So, yes in my case according to the doctors I saw, you can have these symptoms with a migraine maybe tied to flucuations of estrogen.  But, you might want to get more tests done on your mom just to make sure.  Rule out everything.  As for me, I am going to see a migraine Specialist and get an EEG done, just to be sure.  I hope this helps.  Wishing you and your mom all the best, I know first hand this can be scary.  Let us know what happens.

Hi,it could be "absence seizures" or some other typpe of fits.It usually happens later in patients with history of stroke.Don't worry and consult an Neurologist.EEG can be diagnostic.
