Severe neck pain and electrical-like stabbing in head

My 27 year old son has been experiencing severe neck pain, muscle spasms in the neck and arms, and sharp stabbing headache pain which he describes as being like electrical jolts in his head. He has been experiencing most of these symptoms for the past 15 months. The headaches last for days.  He was first diagnosed with a bone spur in the neck but the doctor ruled that out. He has gone for steroid injections and physical therapy with short term relief. He is working with a pain management doctor and his  primary physician. He has had an MRI of the neck. His family doctor has prescribed muscle relaxers and is treating this as tension headaches. I believe he should have a neurological work up to rule out nerv damage. 2 years ago, he had a car accident and had a concussion. What are possible causes of this or possible diagnoses to have his doctor test for?

Hi,
Thank you for your response. I fully agree that an initial assessment by a neurologist will benefit your son. This will determine which tests to take and his management plan as well. It is also good to hear that he will be getting his insurance soon. Take care and best regards.

Thank you for your response. My son will finally be getting health insurance through his new job starting on Sept. 1st and plans to contact a neurologist. Hopefully, the doctor will order tests and we might finally be able to figure out what's going on with him. Do you think this is the right approach.
Thank you.

Hi,
How is your son?  The effects of traumatic brain injury may include physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects. Headaches and movement disorders such as  tremor, uncoordinated muscle movements, and shock-like contractions of muscles may be observed. Aside from MRI, neuropsychological assessment can be performed. Check with your doctor for further evaluation. Rehabilitation is usually the main treatment for the subacute and chronic stages of recovery. Take care and do keep us posted.
