pineal cysts

i was recently diagnosed with a 9.6cm pineal cyst.  it was 5cm 7yrs ago and has grown in that time.  i have recently been experiencing severe headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness and dizziness.  i have been seen by my family doctor who feels it's nothing to worry about, and my neurologist doesnt seem concerned either.  but the headaches have gotten worse over the past few months, although i have no visual problems associated with it.  how serious is this size cyst?  is this something to be concerned with?

Hi,
Yes i think the size of the cyst is important as they generally do not enlarge more than 2cm as large size cysts can compress the ventricular duct and cause hydrocepalus and since optic nerve lies close by they can cause visual symptoms as well.Treatment is decompression by a trained neurosurgeon. I think you need to get a second opinion by a neurologist.

Hi,
Pineal cysts are fluid filled glands in the region of the pineal gland in the brain. The cysts are usually classifies as small (0.5cms). Pineal cysts are asymotomatic usually. But in some cases they may cause certain clinical features. Symptoms may include headaches, increased pressure on the brain because of accumulation of excessive cerebrospinal fluid (hydrocephalus), and vision abnormalities. Large symptomatic pineal cysts may potentially cause serious conditions such as seizures and loss of consciousness. Consult a neurologist and discuss in detail with him about your symptoms. Till then you should try some OTC painkillers and some antianxiety medication like alprazolam. Goodluck.
