femoral nerve damage

femoral nerve damage

I have been diagnosed with a damaged femoral nerve and been told it is unlikely to completely heal.  the nerve was damaged nearly 2 years ago when I had ACL reconstruction surgery.  The pain clinic think the nerve block that I was given at the time damaged the nerve.  The EMG findings show moderate chronic denervation changes mainly to the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris.  What does this mean?

Dear Lindalou,
Thanks for asking the question through this forum.
I would suggest you, not to go by the reports.Rather please look into the disability part.reason being that if your day to day activities are not compromised due to the same, then the importance of this report is same as non-existence.
I agree that the nerve healing chances will be meek after 2 years. But the human body has a great adaptation capacity.Hence don't worry.
As far as the meaning of this statement is concern, please be aware that due to nerve damage, part of the muscle have shown signs of denervation, that is the influence of the nerve supply is decreasing in these muscles. But presently , you need not to be worried as , i assume, that you are not feeling any weakness around the thigh (else you would had surely mentioned the same)
Regards

unfortunately yes I have got weakness and some day to day activities are impossible.  Some movements I find difficult as sometimes the muscles do not kick in,  other times it hurts. The reason for the tests in the first place was due to the problems/pain I am having.  I also have medial knee pain and am having a nerve block just below the knee in a few weeks.   I suppose the only thing I can do is live with it

Dear Lindalou,
You need to rehabilitate the muscles as well as the nerve as the chances of nerve regeneration is possible upto 12-18 months , depending upon the extend of damage. So don't loose hope.
