12 yr. old on Seroquel-having hallucinations

by conniekeller, Apr 23, 2009 01:28PM
My 12 yr old step-daughter is having hallucinations, twitching, abnormal behavior, bone pain, dilirium and possibly mis-diagnosed for having a psychotic disorder.  Currently, she is taking 40 mg of Adderall (adderrall).  She began the Seroquel back in December of 2008 on a low dosage and since Easter 2009 the current Psychiatrist increased her dosage from 50 to 100 mg.  She is still having hallucinations, etc.  When she last visited us (joint legal custody and visitation) while she began talking and saying things that did not make sense, we lowered her dosage to 50 mg. and the next day the same not knowing what to do.  Took her to ER and they did not do anything but take her vital signs which appeared to be normal.  Could the drop in 50 mg cause further damage or is she having an acute reaction to the medicine and should be taken off gradually.  What can we expect if not taken off the medicine or gets increased.  Please advise.

If the Seroquel is causing involuntary movement disorders they need to rule out tardive dyskinesia as a cause. At that point if its diagnosed the only antipsychotic currently available she could take safely is Clozaril. As for hallucinations that can come from psychosis or the medication being at a subclinical dose but if either of the medications are worsening it that's of concern. Have her psychiatrist refer her to a movement disorders specialist and if tardive dyskinesia is diagnosed it is treatable as I well know and I could give more information. However, there are temporary movement disorders such as akathesia that could be treated with a side effect pill but tardive dyskinesia must be ruled out.
