8mo Nephew seizure/testing

My sister called me yesterday to tell me that "Glen" had what she thought was a seizure.  She went immediately to her GP who referred her to a hospitalwith a pediatric neurology dept.  Symptoms: arm flailing, back stiffening and grimacing lasting about 10 seconds.  He only had this once.

My sister called me back today and informed me that the hospital had done an MRI, blood tests.  EEG is scheduled today and they want to do a spinal tap.  The baby is not febrile nor has he been.  No other symptoms have presented.  No abnormal findings overnight and the hospital wants to keep him another night for observation.

History:  Glen was post term at 41 weeks and was a meconium baby c-section and maternal fever of 101.  GBS neg.  No problems post birth until now.

Advice please.

Hi.

It would indeed appear that your nephew may have experienced a seizure. I would advise your sister to go ahead with what the neurologists have suggested.

A spinal tap is not only indicated in cases of seizures in the setting of fever. In both febrile and afebrile seizures, there is a definite need to exclude bacterial meningitis.

Hope this helps.
