9 Year Old Child CPK 3400 Fell to 987 Possible Exercise Induced?

by momofthree72, Feb 28, 2009 09:33PM
My 9 year old son had a CPK level (muslc etype) of 3400 on Wednesday. Friday it had fallen to 987. The history of this is that on Saturday our family had completed a strenuous hike of over 700 stairs up the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi, a total of 1400 stairs. Three days later he had to complete an hour long exercise test at school even though his legs were very sore from the hike. The next day he was unable to walk quite right and complained of pain in his calves. That is why we took him to the dr. and he had the labwork. We have been referred to a neurologist. I am worried to death about muscular dystrophy. My question is "Is it possible for his CPK levels to have fallen from 3400 to 987 if he had something like muscular dystrophy and can't levels like this be induced by sgtrenuous exercise such as he endured? Please answer my question if you have time. I would appreciate it so much.

hello dear momofthree,
how are you doing.
actually normal CPK enzymes values are low. Around 250 IU.
When the muscle cells are damaged, then only these values rise in the blood.

can be due to muscular dystrophy,Injury, myositis, viral fever, etc.

And exertion history you are giving for your child.
So you need a good reporting of his elevated CPK enzyme. As ever 900 is very high.
Let him have full rest and after 1 week repeat the level. If its above 250, then we have to be very careful.
regards
abhijeet
