Thank you Dr! This can turn your life upside down. My 11 yr old son was a healthy and happy child until November 22, 2010 and then he became ill and no one would listen to me! I took him so many times and called my pediatrician constantly and all labs were normal. Yes they were normal because ours was not caused by a virus. The CFS wasn't normal and neither were the MRI's (lesions all over!). We were even told maybe he was depressed and needed Prozac! My son ended up not walking, talking, urinating and hallucinating (NEVER a fever). I have never been so scared! Finally they called a neurologist and he got this stopped (thank god for him!) with Prednisone drip x5 days. We are still in rehab and part-time school and when he is tired it shows. Getting second opinion for MS. Hopefully, because of this our hospital here has learned a little and will be quicker to act with the next child. ADEM is complicated! Thank you for stating how serious this can be!
Hi,
How are you?
The prognosis of ADEM varies from individual to individual. Generally a corticosteroid therapy can shorten the duration of symptoms and halts the disease progression.
Some patients with ADEM recover completely; others recover with mild neurological impairment. In some cases if the attack is severe, ADEM can be fatal.
Hope this helps!
