Body Jerks, But Awake

My wife has (from what I've researched) hypnic jerks while falling asleep and while sleeping. We've been told this is normal. What isn't normal (in our opinion) is that she has these when she is awake. She might be reading, walking, writing, talking, or pretty much any activity. Some days she'll have quite of few of them and other days she won't. But she does seem to have more when she is tired or stressed. She's had an MRI and an EEG but the doctors told us they didn't see enything abnormal. I think they gave her Clenazopam (only if I remember right) but after awhile it stopped working. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have these jerks due to premature aging of my cerebellum.I was on Tegretol(carbomazapine)for 10 years, due to a torn nerve branch on my spinal cord.My neurologist prescribed Seroquel, which helps immensely as I can now sleep.Hope this helps.

It could be the genetic disorder that my sister and I have called myoclonus dystonia. Here`s a wed site that might help explain things. http://www.omsusa.org/article4.pdf
And another one is:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK1414/

I feel like you might have just saved my life Sicity.  I have been dealing with sleep deprivation for 18 years.  When I lay down or even sit for any extended period of time (long car rides (less if I'm driving), sitting in theaters, and when I lay down every night).  I feel like a jumper cable is connected to my lower spine and when it jolts I jerk violently and my body tenses and my heart pounds(I have been taking Requip, which is a parkinsons medication, for 18 years and it helps take the edge off the shocking sensation but does not stop it).   I have had X-ray, EEG and sleep study done and still have not had specific diagnosis although the neurologist I went to charged me $5000 and told me in was monoclonal seizures.  He put me on Keppra but I could not take it because of behavioral side effects, and I honestly can't afford to go back because I still owe him for the last visit and he spent very little time explaining anything to me (I felt dismissed a ifs it/I was insignificant) .  I dread going to bed at night and usually stay up as late as possible postponing the inevitable.  I think my next step is to take the PDF found on the website you suggested to my primary doctor and see if we can narrow my problem down enough to treat it correctly.  I am truly grateful!  God bless you!!

im a 28 year old male who has had these twitches, as i call them, as far back as i can remember. sometimes i can feel them coming on and can stop them. when i do that it looks like im about to nod off, but am still wide awake. other times i dont feel them coming on and i get a sever twitch through my whole body which leaves me covered in goose bumps. it happens when its hot cold wet dry. i do not know the cause of them.sometimes they are so bad that if im standing the twitches cause my feet to leave the ground. Im worried that its a neurological problem. Can anyone help me figure out the cause of them and is there anything that i can do to get rid of them. Any tips or suggestions please email me at ***@****. thank you
