Brain surgery is the option?

hi, im grace, i just want to ask, is there a possibility that in the  10x scans of the brain, they will have a negative result and after 11 months past, they had found a blood clot in the brain?! They said i had a stroke that causes my left leg to be paralyzed. I was just puzzled that they didnt find that earlier. Is there any option between brain surgery and non - surgical procedure? i was told by a micro-neurosurgeon that brain surgery is very a 50-50 procedure.

Hi.

I would agree to most of what ggreg has posted. If you are uncomfortable at what your present doctor has been advising you, it would be best that you seek an opinion of another neurologist.

A consult with a cardiologist is essential especially since you suffer from obviously uncontrolled hypertension. You cannot undertake surgery if your blood pressure is not managed adequately.

When you consult your neurologist, you should "talk" to him, not just listen to what he suggests. Ask him everything about what is to be done, what would happen after that, what is your prognosis. Tell him your concerns and ask for alternative options for managing your condition. Remember, it is your body and your life. You should have an active part in your treatment.

Hope this helps.

(PATSY, if you're reading this thread, PLEZ post)

Grace,
You can see a cardiologist for a second opinion.  Please arrange to visit another physician on an emergency basis, have the surgeons send over your pertinent scans to whomever you consult with.  DO NOT rely on what we say.

No one is going to "cut nerves"; they're going to remove the blood clot, and perhaps check on some other blood vessels that aren't functioning properly in your body.  When the operation takes place, sometimes just going in the head can hurt the brain a little, it's a very delicate organ, so that's what the doctor was referring to, about "cutting nerves."

A blood clot on the brain can do some major neurological damage, to where you might not only lose function of your limbs, like the burst blood vessels (strokes) in the past have done to you, but also a clot that is large can press on the brain, then affect your thinking ability, so of course they want to get it out.  See, I think you've had several arterial insults in your head over the last several years, and some do their damage and then disappear visually in the brain, others leave evidence.  Each event shows up in different places, and in less or more obvious ways.  So, it's a good thing thing they kept an eye on you and found this clot.  Bleeding in the brain is always dangerous.

But as for a second opinion, with your apparent history of strokes and high/low blood pressure and blood clots all taken together, a cardiologist might be the best person to speak to about safety of the operation, about the source of all these strokes and blood clots and whatnot, and what treatment and lifestyle changes you'll need to do in order to prevent all this from happening in the future. You'll want to keep this man at your side for a number of years and visit him regularly.

But DO NOT rely on what we're all saying here for a "second opinion."  Please, Grace, actually go see another physician, and request scans be sent over to whomever you consult with, and arrange this meeting on an emergency basis.  Make it real clear to whomever you speak to about an appointment with the cardio guy, that surgery for a blood clot on the brain will be scheduled as soon as you get this second opinion, so you need a squeeze-in appointment immediately, please.

2 months at a wheelchair and 4months at using a cane. 6months at the most. But my hand paralysis started year 2005 but they didnt find anything and they just said that it was a nerve entrapment then year 2007 at the midst of april my both legs started to be paralyzed and only my left hand but again they didnt found anything. Its only half of my body. The left hand and left leg but on the brain ct result, there was none and after few months later, around first few weeks of december, a neuro-surgeon found a clot and he wanted to cut some nerves and i really thought that it was a very difficult dicision because its located on the brain. The surgeon said they'll gonna cut some nerves in the brain and on the abdomen.

And the problem was, my blood pressure was unpredictable because sometimes it goes up to 240/200mmHg or goes down to 90/60mmHg but they cant figuratively find the cause of fluctuation of my blood pressure.

they didnt give me an option but surgery and i just wanted some opinion about it before consenting it to be done.

Hi.

How long has your left leg been paralyzed?

There are many factors that could lead to a negative result on brain imaging and these could have led to the loss of findings on initial brain scans.

Depending on the severity and location of the blood clot, treatment can be conservative or surgical. You should discuss the pros and cons of both treatment options with your neurosurgeon.

Good luck.
