Cavernous Angioma

by ron321, Dec 24, 2007 01:39PM
Our 15 year old niece was just diagnosed with a Cavernous Angioma located on the upper portion of her brain stem. It was found after a bleed had occurred . This happened about five days ago and she is still hospitalized. She currently has problems with coordinated movements in her arms and legs, but everything else seems to be fine aside from occasional blurred vision.

-What is the probability of a full recovery assuming a bleed does not occur again? How long would the recover take?

-I have read that the probability of a re-bleed is around 10% in the first year. If a bleed occurs again will the effects be worse?

- Do the symptoms imply that the location of the Cavernous angioma on the brainstem could result in life threaten effects if another bleed occurs?

- We have been told that an operation will at some point be required to remove this. How long should we wait before attempting this and what are the dangers and success rate?

- Do you know of any top notch doctors or facilities in the US (or world) that have preformed this operation with a high degree of success?

-We are located out side of the US and we are willing to go world wide for the best treatment. How much would an operation and treatment of this condition cost (approx) in the US so we can seek funding?

-What about other un-seen Cavernous Angioma's in other parts of her brain?

-Anything else you can tell us that will assist us?
