Bacterial Meningitis and PTSD

In December 2007 I underwent spinal fusion surgery at L3 - S1.  During the surgery I was infected with staph through the dura matter, thus resulting in my contracting bacterial meningitis.  Along with the meningitis I contracted septicemia, severe sepsis, cellutis, encephalopahy, pneumonia, and toxic shock.  Know, nine months later, I am still experiencing headaches, severe nightmares, flashbacks, emotional issues, etc., even though I am on an antidepressant.  In addition, I am still healing from my back surgery, which caused permanent damage to the L4/L5 nerve root, resulting in left foot drop and severe left leg pain with muscle spasms.  How long can I anticipate having the lingering problems from the meningitis, PTSD, headaches, etc?  I'm aware that the actual spinal fusion will take at least a year for the grafts to complete their growth and I've been given little hope that the nerve root at L4/L5 can regenerate after such a long period of time.  Thanks for your feedback.  During my bout with meningitis, I have 26 days of which I have no memory except the delusions I experienced.  Is there any hope that my memory will return?

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
I would suggest you to learn some relaxation exercises like breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation. Right now you are under a lot of stress and it is very unlikely that you will be able to recollect those 26 days. However as time goes by and as your level of stress decreases and your headaches and other symptoms improve you should be able to get your memory back. I would also suggest you to try alternate therapy like acupuncture for your symptoms. A good rehab specialist may also help.
Take care!
