Electric type shock in the head

Electric type shock in the head

About a month ago my 21 yeard old son was sitting outside and had a sudden electric type shock on the left side of his head.  He heard like a "buzz" almost like when electrical wires buzz at the same time.  He thought he had been stung by something at first.  He didn't get a headache or anything - it was a quick shock, then it went away.  A couple of hours ago, the same thing happened in the exact same location in his head.  I suggested maybe he should see his doctor but I'm not sure a primary care physician would be the right one to see.  Do you think he should see a neurologist?  Or could it just be "nothing".  He's in good health - but he is a smoker.

Has he recently come off an SSRI?  I know when I stopped taking my Lexapro I had "electrical storms" in my head randomly.  It almost felt like my brain was hooked up to a car battery, but the connections were loose or something.  Very strange, indeed.  But it is common when coming of anti-depressants.  If this is the case, it should go away within a month or two at the most.
If that is not the case, I would probably go to the doctor.  You can start at your primary care doctor, and have them give you a referral if necessary.
