Exercise after a dissected corodid & stroke?

Can you direct me to or provided information about aerobic exercise after a dissected corodid, that resulted in stroke? One doctor says no exercise and two doctors say exercise is ok but take it easy.

A little history: I’m a 48 year old male that before the stoke was over weight but healthy. The stoke occurred about seven months ago after a bout with the flue. After no sleep and lots coughing for three days, I  took some cough  medicine and Advil PM. The next morning I woke up early and my right had felt like it was asleep. Two hospitals later, a dissected corodid was found. The doctors believe  the dissection was the result of high blood pressure, stress, cough medicine and Advil PM. I very fortunate to have limited stroke related damage. I’ve drop some weight and feel a lot better. I currently take lisinpopril, warfarin and nortriptyline.

Six years ago I survived a Triple A. The anuerism began its tear in the middle of my chest, went up the right and left charotid artery, down, around the kidneys and into the abdomen. The hand of God and a genius, Dr. Andrew Goldstein of Arizona, put me back together. I now find from a recent duplex scan on the charotid arteries I have a dissection on both the R and L artery. I am an Olympian and tho I have reached the ripe YOUNG age of 80 yrs. I still teach fencing, a martial and physical art. I am monitored closely but would like to know your feelings about workouts. I do get some pain if I go more than 20 minutes. Thank you for your time and help

Curious where you are with the exercise.  My doc told me exercise was VERY important to keep remaining vascular system clear, that once the dissection healed, it was scar tissue, done.  Be sure to see someone who has seen this before.  I do 30 minutes to an hour of cardio each week including pretty intense spin class, plus lift weights three days a week, plus just opened a personal training business.  I do avoid exercises that raise my BP too much or make me hold my breath.  Somehow, I manage to still be alive!

Hi,

How are you?
Since physical straining is one of the causes of carotid artery dissection, doctors do tell their patients not to exercise vigorously. However mild exercises like walk or a stroll in the park should be fine.
The key thing here is that you should not over exert yourself in any way. Strenuous exercise can cause further dissection of the artery.
