Loss of sensation and muscle strength only on right side of body

I have been experiencing some extremely odd symptoms that many doctors have not been able to answer; including Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville. These symptoms include: lack of sensation (temperature, touch, etc.) on the entire right side of my body, lack of muscle strength (also only on the right side of my body), hearing difficulties (right ear and went to 7 different doctors including Mayo Clinic and say that there is NOTHING wrong with my physical ear or hearing that they can test for), extreme fatigue, not sleeping well and dizziness (not experienced every day as opposed to the previous symptoms). Even though I do experience these symptoms every day, they can fluctuate but they never return back to the normal sensation. For example one day I was running water in the sink to wash dishes and I tested the water with my right hand and it didn't seem warm so I tested it with my left hand and burned my hands pretty badly. I was involved in a couple of serious car accidents so I have been to every neurologist, phydiatrist (sp? the ones that stick you with needles and electricity), and orthopedic doctor in the state of Florida it seems like. The MRI's of my cervical say that there is only swelling from the whiplash; the thorasic MRI showed slight herniated disk along with four degenerative disks, and a spur which was shunned off as if I was born with it. My brain MRI with contrast did not show any type of abnormality. All of the testing for the needle and electricity test turned out normal on all accounts. They I started to look to other places since one blood test said that my B-12 was low for someone that is 22 years old. After extensive testing (3 different doctors), each said that there is nothing that they can do for me and that they will monitor me to make sure that it doesn't get worse. I KNOW there is something that is wrong and I have no idea who or where to turn to. I am so young and experiencing all of these crazy phenomenons and I am terrified that there might be any help for me. If anyone could please give me some insight about your knowledge and/or personal experience I would greatly appreciate it because I am losing hope really really fast and starting to give up since all of the other doctors have already. Any and all help would be extremely beneficial. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I can relate to everything you're feeling man.  I'm 18 and was in a car accident where the truck we were in flew off the road, over a guard-rail, and down 15 feet, landing on my side of the truck.  I slammed my whole right side off the door and ever since I've been experiencing the same deal.  Loss of strength throughout my entire right side, ear aches and hearing difficulties in my right ear, and all the muscles on the right side of my face seem to not work as well as before.  When I lift my head up and down my back right neck muscle shakes and feels as though my left neck muscle is doing all the work. I can't feel any of my body weight on my right side along with no sensations, I can feel warmth and cold, but not as accurately as I can with my left hand or foot.  I too had the Nerve Conduction Testing done but just on my lower body (butt, legs, and feet) and it all showed normal.  I've also had an MRI of my lower back and that showed normal as well.  The only thing that they mentioned to me was a degenerative disk, but they said it was normal.  Also my Neurologist can't figure anything out either, which really has me worried.  I'm thinking that maybe I tore something in my groin and also something either in my shoulder or at the base of my neck, like a partial tear on a ligament or maybe even a complete tear.  Like, I have no body awareness from the back of my head and down my shoulder to my hand.  It's all hard to explain but I have a couple appt's set up with a physical therapist and a sports doctor to look at my groin and shoulder/neck.  My accident happened back in February, the day before my birthday :) what an awesome birthday present that was.  And it just seems to be getting worse and I too am frustrated with my doctors scratching their heads with no answers for me.  And also not being able to play my last year of lacrosse or doing anything physical has got me down.  Any help on this would be wonderful and both of us would appreciate it.  Thanks.   - Scotty

We are rowing the same boat here. . . .After complaining of this sensation and that pain and this weakness and hearing loss, ear pain, etc for 14 years. . . .after being offered antidepressants by multiple doctors because  I'm female and I must be depressed. . . . I finally was having intermittent paralysis, marked weakness, difficulty swallowing, headaches that felt like ice picks in the back of my head, and head pressure that felt like my head was going to explode.  Then, I had an episode where I passed out because my heart was racing and slowing--only to find out that my blood pressure was going way up, too, along with some bowel incontinence.  An angel of mercy listened to me and promised to figure out what was going on because I was obviously NOT anxious or depressed.  He found my broken neck with incomplete SCI.  I had surgery almost 2 years ago now.  I was told things would improve.  Only my hearing issues have improved some, but I can walk and that is a miracle.  I still have a kink in my spinal cord at C5-6.  Since it has been there for (maybe) 14 years, it may never heal or may have so much scar tissue that it cannot self repair.

I never wanted to be told that reading about SCI has suggested symptoms to me, so this is the first time in almost 16 years that I have done any "research."  As a nurse, I have some knowledge, but not all of my symptoms fall into the neat little box that medicine likes to create.  I am so glad to have found this forum and thank you all for sharing these painful issues.  We are not alone.

I have almost the same symptoms as you, except mine is on my left side, I got a pretty serious neck injury about 3 months ago. Already been to a neurologist who insisted everything was perfectly fine, a back specialist who told me to come back if things get worse, physical therapy, and already at 2 chiropractors. I have loss of sensation (although not too severe) on my entire left side of the body. Supposedly this is not normal, because if you have a disc or nerve damage from neck injuries, you're only spposd to feel it in a particular part of your body (ex: down your arm for instance). I also have weakness in my left arm and left leg, which come and go, and like yourself, my left ear has been feeling a bit funny (it's been echo-y and weird the past 3 months). I got my hearing and my ear checked out and the doctor said that everythign is normal. Doctors dont seem to want to get to the bottom of it,a nd keep telling me that i just need to monitor my pain and others have thought I was paranoid. If you find out anything on what this could be, please let me know and I will do the same. I'm only 21, and I am freaking out, especially because i haven't gotten any answers.

Sorry you are having these problems.  My issues were markedly worse on the left side of my body.  I would tell you NOT to see chiroprators. . . I was told that if I had, I would not have walked out alive due to the undiagnosed cord compression.  Be careful.  In my case, it was a matter of having the situation escalate and the right doctor there. . .

I have the the exact symptoms on my right side(except for hearing loss).I noticed in a few nights ago ,I woke up in the night and I had no coordination and felt I my foot leg and arm on the right side felt heavy and weird. I also tested my bath water yesterday and I thought it was perfect temp and then I put my left hand in and got burned.I have a loss of coordination on one side of my body. Even typing is a task right now .also I slightly notice that lips are tingly on one side and I am having spells of dizziness..i am so freaked out about this .I was thinking I might have had a small stroke..but I am only 26.I am  hesitant to see my doctor because they arent very good  (I cant change them because of my insurance) they misdiagnosed my liver problems for almost two years and it was a friends dad that actually helped me and saved my life with a diagnosis .I am not sure whats going on but I noticed my symptoms and yours are quite similar..yet I have never had an injury to my neck or back that I can remember.I hope you feel better and find out whats going on:)

I have the exact symptoms on my left side more than my right side. After a car accident in 2005, I found it impossible to get a doctor to take any notice. Then a year later a Specialist said he was sure it was a aneurysm near the base of my scull causing the symptoms. After a angio of my brain and neck, it was comfirmed I have aneurysms with are causing the symptoms. The system with car accident insurers make it difficult to get  accurate medical reports including radiology reports.

I have been experiencing the same thing as all of you. My main concern is that it feels like I am losing any muscular tissue in my left side. The skin is looser, not as much tone from the face to my toes, waking up with night sweats every night, and swollen lymphnodes in my groin along with my neck. I am really getting worried but the docs seem to think I am fine. Sorry to hear about you all and please post new and or any progress.

Thanks

I, too, have L side loss of sensation that occurs on and off... my face, arm, leg and especially foot.  I was told it was TIA's and then silent migraines.  I am going out of my mind worrying.

My son is 14 and he is experiencing right sided problems, he has a bad limp, foot drops down, can't move his right leg at all from knee down, now he is having the same problem with his right arm, it is slowing doing the same thing, he has no strength in his hand, can't write, I am so worried about him, he cannot recall falling or getting injured in anyway, all he has done is weight lift, he did say he pulled his lower back out a few weeks ago, and it was painful and when it quit hurting about 3-4 after that is when his leg started, then after going to ER, his right arm started, it all is progressing slowly. He has no pain, no numbness, but to touch his leg/arm, they feel cold. If anyone has any suggestions about any of this. He has had a MRI and we are waiting to see doctor and hopefully a neurologist.

Finally, some others that can understand. Left side numbness, weakness, loss of sensation, blurry vision on left side and fatigue. Already had Brain MRI that came back clear. Symptoms go on and off since Nov. Have a new doc. and from the moment he saw me and my age- 22- he said it was all in my head. Looking for a new dr. or nerologist. No accident or injury that I can remember. Also just noticed in past week, loss of balance. I have been a dancer for 19 years so obviously I usually have excellent balance..and know when it is off! Anyway, if someone can tell me anything...at all...I would appreciate it.

I am currently trying to learn to walk all over again.  I had severe leg cramps in late December 2009 within two days I was unable to walk.  I spent nearly a month and a half in the hospital and rehab facility and left there unable to walk.  I was in a wheelchair until two weeks ago.  I was taken off my medicines simvastin and gemfrobzil and metformin.  I have not taken any of those drugs since Dec. 22,2009.  They did a muscle biopsy and it came back abnormal.  They say first it is the drugs and then no it is not, because the  numbness was only on the right side.  I say they really are a little confused as to the reason and treatment and outcome.  Please let me know if any of you have had this experience.   I feel alone at times as I am progressing, however, I am not sure I will walk unassisted ever again.

I am from India and I too have same kind of symptoms on my right side of my body. I am 25 and had problems with my right eyes and ears from my young age (I feel the same sound heard low on right ears and I have higher powered glass on my right eyes). And now suddenly one morning I feel my right leg and right hands have less strength and my movements on right fingers are not normal(The movements that can be made by left hand fingers cannot be  done by my right fingers). I have fallen down many times on circumstances when I had to lean on my right leg. I was given a shot of 2 ml Depo-Medrol after which I have very little recovery but not fully recovered. Anyone please help me if this is a known problem. Please :(

I, too have had the same problems for years. I broke my right wrist as a child, and nearly broke my left arm. My back has been broken in 4 places, but thankfully it healed well and I am still able to walk, though it is painful at times.

When i was only 7 yrs old, I felt numbness in my right side and tightening of my chest in the general area of heart while i was playing on the playground at school. I felt very sick, but thought that maybe I just needed to throw up so I headed to the bathroom, at which point I passed out. My mom was called to the school. She told me that my lips were blue that I was fighting for every breath...I actually was declared clinically dead when the EMS arrived, but momma prayed for me and, obviously, someone up there heard her prayer.

Anyway, ever since the break of my wrist and the passing out in school, I have had steady loss of sensory feeling in my right side...just the right side not the left. Just as another person posted before me, it is a little hard to type right now due to pain radiating thru my right arm. I have the pains off and on, sometimes going months without one moment of pain, then I have one onset of it and struggle with it for the rest of the month. My right hand turns blue and swells, lots of tenderness. usually my right leg does the same thing, but sometimes it's only my hand. Also I have had a few times in which i had heavy chest pains, dr said it was chest wall inflammation, but when you combine that with the pain in the arm, it can be intense...however the unknown condition I have has slight to extreme chest pains, similar to that of a heart attack..I am unsure if I might have more than one condition or not, and if there is more than one thing going on here, It would be nice to know what's up with me.

The neurologist I went to did the sensory feeling test on me, and he said I have already lost 89% of my sensory feeling on my right side.

If anyone knows what might be causing all of the above let me know!!

I forgot to mention that along with the slight to extreme chest pains comes moments of being unable to breathe...especially when im in heavy- extreme pain, though it is prevalent with medium pain, but is bearable. heavy-extreme pain is near unbearable and the difficulties breathing lead to me passing out or losing consciousness altogether for several minutes-hours on end.. longest known time of pain for me was 6 hours solid..I was literally unable to move any part of my body due to numbness/chest pain/inability to take a deep breath. Sometimes the left side of my body is affected by this...I simply wish I knew what it was...having had the issues since i was 7, and being 29 now...it would be nice to know whats up with my body, especially when each episode of it is growing worse.

I have these exact symptoms. Loss of feeling in right arm, neck pain, loss of sensation in right side of face and leg. I'm a 21 year old man and couldn't be more petrified about the situation I'm in. Never been in a car crash, although did have an incident in which I fell from a tall heigh breaking my right arm. I do worry that it is to do with neck difficulties, I.e a disc or nerves not functioning correctly

My daughter hurt her back ice skating 10 months ago and has ever since had back pain and loss of feeling in her right side. This comes and goes, but has been prevalent for 2 months. She cannot walk unaided and is now finding herself fuzzy headed, memory loss and her left side is not working well either. MRI's and xray, nerve conduction tests all come back clear..however she is testing positive for the babinski reflex, which has been brushed aside as inconclusive. We now been referred to a psychologist!!!

My daughter was in a car accident-as with all the above comments, she to has had the exact symptoms as everyone else has posted. And of course all the scans and testing are "normal". And the doctors all try to it's in her head! Well I agree because she sustained a really significant concussion and the problem is from that! Why do doctors always fall back on psychological cause just because they can't figure it out? I pray for all of you out there to find some answers. Let some of these doctors live one day in your shoes.

Has anyone tied a chiropractor to realign their necks and spines?  Sometimes if there are impinged nerves bc of lack of space between vertebrates it can cause a number of things that regular doctors don't pick up.  I myself am going to dr after dr to see why my right hand is swelling and I've been cleared for arthritis and no answers yet.  I've been seeing a Chiro so realignment is not my issue.

Hi,
I have my niece who is only 10 years old and began with a tingly sensation on her right leg and arm. Now it is to the point where she can not feel it at all. Doctors have tested her for multiple sclerosis and have done MRIs, ultrasounds, x-rays, and many other tests.  Yet they still can't diagnosis her with anything. These tests occurred at the Los Angeles children's hospital. I'm so afraid of of what is happening with her. Doctors are sending her to receive massages and she still isn't getting better.  She is dragging her leg now and doesn't use her arm. Now she is to the point when she is in school, she no longer participates in anything because she is afraid of falling. She is vomiting at school and is sent home almost everyday. She doesn't want to eat anything and only drinks a lot of liquids. When she is at home and gets visitors, she doesn't want to play either. I believe she is getting depressed because of the "unknown". My poor niece needs help.  Within the next month, she will be taken to the UCLA hospital and I just pray that someone can help her there.  I'm afraid that her symptoms will get worse by the day and won't be reversible if too much time passes.  Please help, me, someone?!?!

Finally some people that understand but I'm sorry you all are hurting. I am experiencing very similar problems. Started about 15 years ago when I fell & had a lingering burning sensation on the right side of my groin that got progressively worse each day until I was in so much pain I was taken moaning in the fetal position to the hospital where I was admitted. Tests were coming back ok (MRI,EMG,bloodwork) & at some point the horrible pain felt like it burst & subsided leaving the whole right side of my body with a loss of sensation muscle weakness & twitching, & also sexual dysfunction due to the lack of sensation. At least that burning pain was gone or so I thought. A couple of months ago I sought help for my sexual dysfunction & was able to achieve better erections but only to aggravate that old would that I thought was behind me. The burning pain came back & is now down my leg into my foot & also the left side of my body same thing but not quite as bad as the right. I feel like some kind of freak. My wife, family, doctors all don't understand what is wrong & can't believe I am injured this badly. Sometimes I wish I had MS or HIV just so people would understand that it is no something that I can control, what a nightmare. Now sexual dysfunction is the least of my worries. I have given up hope. It the doctors & my family have given up, why shouldn't I? Good luck to all of you. God bless us all.
