Meds cocktail

by wildcolonialboy, Feb 27, 2008 09:46AM
Saw my epileptologist yesterday and she put me on a cocktail of 3 AEDs;Lamictal,Keppra, and Dilantin. Actually I've been on Dilantin for 16 years and was seizure free and then I had a breakthrough seizure[devastating].My doc is transitioning me off of Dilantin and onto Lamictal. She said the Keppra would be a bridge while the Lamictal becomes fully therapeutic. What can I expect in terms of side effects? Is it realistic to think that Lamictal will eventually be my only AED? I currently take 600mgs of Dilantin daily. How long should it take for the Dilantin to get out of my system? As the Dilantin level decreases am I at a greater risk for having another seizure? I appreciate all and any comments.

hi,your doctor is doing right thing, side effects of lamictal are less as compared to dilantin. Moreover, addition of keppra will take care of any breakthrough seizure due to fall of dilantin levels in blood.

Relax, lamictal has shown its efficacy in trials and works good as monotherapy too.
