Neuropathy

I have post herpatic neuropathy. I have taken Tegretol and Gabapentin with good effect, however after a few months I developed terrible migranes. I've also tried Lyrica and Lamotragine with the same side effect. My neurologist has prescribed Topamax with these medications but it doesn't help the headaches. Normally I suffer from the very occasional headache and am a very healthy person. Triptans to do not relieve the migrane caused from the gapapentin.
Any suggestion for pain relief would be most welcome. I am not interested in taking narcotics etc.

Thanks.

Hello Susan,

I too started developing neropathy after a herpes infection. I have numbness, tingling, muscle twitching, and tremor. I have had a number of MRIs, bone scans, EMG/nerve conduction study, VNG, spinal tap, and Evoked potential test, which all turned out to be negative. This is a workup exclusively for MS. The only thing that has come out positive is the Epstein Barr titers and low Vitamin D levels. All of this is very scary and has been going on for the last 5 months. Most physicians will not acknowledge  post herpetic neuropathy. Did your physician diagnose you with this? How did you find a physician to even acknowledge this diagnosis?

Thanks

I found that Neurontin increased the number of migraines I had and the severity of them, and while I was on Neurontin I had migraines preceded by visual field disturbances--patterns of flickering lights all over the filed of vision of my right eye--that I had never had before the Neurontin and have not had since.

My overall experience of Neurontin was not good--it screwed up my calcium/magnesium levels and threw my thyroid and adrenal systems way out of whack. Years later I'm still trying to recover. Even though Neurontin's not absorbed by the body, I suspect that in the process of binding to calcium/magnesium receptors it can reset endocrine levels in complicated ways. My neurologist didn't believe me when I complained--

For what it's worth, I've discovered that if I avoid dairy products I have no migraines at all.
