Noctural nausea and vomiting attacks

A few years ago I started having attcks of extreme nausea and vomiting which would last several hours and the after effects of memory loss and inability to concentrate would last up to a week. The incidences had been getting further apart and prior to this week the last one was 8 months ago (three month intervals prior) The last one was more severe thatn any other had been and I have little recollection of the period although I was vomiting heavily and going to the bathroom every hour or so. After several hours I became aware of my surroundings and began to re-cover but despite visiting my GP have no idea what is happening to me or what my condition is.

the symptoms are definitely 'head' based and the gastric element seems to be a consequence of the extreme nausea which causes vomiting. Although I occassionally get a pre-warning by fleeting feelings of nausea a few hours or days before, generally It catches me unawares - I go to sleep and wake an hour or so later very ill.
