Please Reply :) (post spinal fusion)

its been 12 days since i had the operation to fuse my C1 and C2, i feel a lot better just have a stiff neck, still on painkillers. I was worried about causing damage, yesterday i kicked a football around in my garden taking a few shots, i was upright for most of the day and not sure if i overdid it. But nothing strenuous. slightly worried at the moment, as i wasn't sure what i should be doing, i'm in a hard collar which is tight, but will now be taking it easy for a few weeks. Its difficult being 19 and very active. i didn't realise their was still a risk of the metal work failing.

Dear Matt,

Now that is over a year after sugery have you found your life is back to normal?  My daughter had c1 c2 fusion back in Dec of 08.  I was just wondering what sports you are back into

right ok. I don't know yet how much restriction i will have, probably quite significant, i know the C1 & C2 account for most of the rotation, i'm told the lower bones of the spine will begin to take over rotation C3 etc. I will get in contact with my surgeon, so i know what i can, and cannot do.

thanks, Matt.

Correct.  I have no restriction in movement. I would call your surgeon and ask about activity restrictions so you know what you can do.  You could accidentally slip and fall kicking a ball.

c5-c6 fusion doesn't restrict head movement right?

i wasn't really told a lot when i was discharged from hosipital, just not to try moving my neck as before, the collar is tight, my neck doesn't move. I think its just a CT scan in 3months. would i know if their was a problem?

I had c5-6 fused.  I think it's a little early to be doing things.  I know it's hard.  I was bored to tears.  I was restricted for 6 weeks.  I would take it easy.  What did your doctor tell you about activity?  The fusion can fail, especially if people smoke.
