Hi there. The degree of speech impairment that your brother will have could vary from dysarthria or slow, slurred speech due to damage to areas that control muscles of speech mechanism, apraxia of speech where there is difficulty in saying words correctly in a consistent manner. This deficit is evaluated immediately after the injury by a neurologist. Speech language pathologist may evaluate the cognitive and communication skills, neuropsychologist may evaluate other cognitive and behavioral abilities and occupational therapist can assess cognitive skills to do daily activities. Immediate intervention and therapy is the best approach taken by these specialists. It would be nice if you spoke to the treating neurologist about these possibilities. Take care.
