Results of C-spine MRI

I had a C-Spine MRI the report noted C4-5 area.

There is posterior disc osteophyte complex formation with some left uncovertebral joint hyperthrophy. This results in flattening of the anterior thecal sac and some flattening of the cord with mild central canal stenosis to approx. 8mm at this level. no signifcant facet hyperthrophy is noted.

What does this mean in a nutshell. Would this explain the the burning sensation and mild numbness to the right and left thumb and first finger mainly rhe problem is the right hand. Also the right middle finger I have moderate pain while closing the right middle finger most times. Could this be related to trauma to the neck and upper back approx. 20 years ago. A heavy box fell on the back of my neck while bending over to grab a box on a laddeor stair well.

Disc Osteophyte Complex is degenerative disc disease (arthritis) that many of us get as we age. Yes, the report indicates that your symptoms are from that. You need to start PT also. THe DDD is likely to worsen as you age also, so you are going to have to continue some exercises on your neck and watch your posture.

Thank you for your question. Your reports suggest hat your symptoms may be due to nerve irritation in the cervical (neck) spine because of stenosis where contact between the edges of the vertebrae can cause neck pain. In few people, this pain may be referred and perceived as occurring in the back of head (as electric sensation)- LHERMITTES SIGN, shoulders, fingers, arms or chest, rather than just the neck. Other symptoms may include vertigo, nausea (dizziness) and stiffness can be intermittent. It will be best that you consult a neurologist who would like to prescribe Pain killers, steroid and muscle relaxants. Other treatments could be cervical orthosis such as a soft cervical collar/stiffer neck brace to restrict neck movement. In addition, cervical traction may also be suggested by the doctor, if condition is severe. Hope this helps.
