Seizures

I recently had a gran mal seizure and during the eeg I also had a seizure.  Nothing shows on ct or mri so the diagnosis is abnormality on the left side of brain.  I started topomax which caused extreme insomnia.  Nothing helped, now I am on Depakote about 4 days.  Still not sleeping well.  My pcp did some blood work and said I was in menapause.  My question is could the toxic amount of topomax casue the hormone imbalance.  I also have Hep C.

Hello.

The reason behind your hospitalization is to prevent a seizure. In a hospital, they can monitor your EEG and also give you intravenous sedatives for sleep.

Thank you.  Neuro said it was acting as a toxic in my system and changed meds.  I have tried ambien, lunesta and adavan all to no success.  My neuro said hospital if I dont sleep soon.  What do you think hospital will do??  thank you.

Hello.

Topamax should not cause hormonal imbalance. And the dose you were prescribed for epilepsy may not have been a toxic dose.

You may ask for an add-on medicine for sleep problems. t is very important that you get proper sleep. Lack of sleep may sometimes act as trigger for the seizures.
