Sleep-driving and Ambien

Sleep-driving and Ambien

I've had insomnia for years (worse in times of stress). For the last 3 months I've been taking:
10mg Zolpidem (Ambien - sleeping aid) nightly
20mg Citalopram (Celexa - antidepressant ) in the morning

At about the same time, I started experience dizziness, diagnosed as "vertigo".
I also experienced hormonal changes which could be attributed to menopause, but blood work revealed elevated pituitary gland function and a small growth was found on my pituitary gland.

Then on Friday, as I was driving my son to school, I had an incident I believe may have been sleep-driving.  I vaguely remember the drive, swerving on the road, and experiencing double vision.  I seemed to "wake up" while I was stopped at a light and found I had a flat tire.  My son told me later, that before the drive, I'd fallen asleep on the couch (something I have no recollection of) and that he'd had trouble waking me up.  He said I was mumbling and seemed tired and out of it and that my driving was clumsy and I kept hitting the curb.  He said I complained of double vision.  He said he kept suggesting that I stop driving, but that I was mumbling and he couldn't hear what I was saying.  I am extremely paranoid about accidents, so I know if I'd been fully aware of what I was doing I never would have put him in that danger.

Question:

Does this sound like sleep-driving?  Does this happen when taking these medications as prescribed? Should I see a sleep specialist?

They have ruled out that the double-vision was caused by the pituitary growth.  They say it's too small to be hitting the optic nerve.

I have stopped taking the Ambien, and my insomnia and fatigue are back in full swing, but I'm afraid to take any sleep medication.
