Small Fiber Neuropathy

Since December of last year I have begun to have a burning sensations in my toes that progressed quickly into pain on the bottoms of my feet.  After several months of treating with topical solutions the condition and pain go worse.  The pain then progressed up my legs to above ankles.  I began seeing a neurologist to start addressing.  I have had multiple blood tests, MRI, Electro tests, etc.  Nothing has popped up yet and now I'm being asked to take a $1000 out of pocket blood test to detect Small Fiber disorders.  I am on large amounts of Gabapentin everyday to continue to control the pain and have an appt with Dermatologist to begin exploring Botox injections in my feet to assist with the hyperhydrosis that came along free for this condition.  Recently started taking Alpha Hydroic Acid from advice from other posts.

Curious if anyone has seen similar situation and if different route of treatment worked.  Would love any feedback!!!

I appreciate the response, but should have indicated that one of the first tests that my primary physician performed was a blood sugar test (actually three times) and all results have turned back normal.  They have also tested for everything under the sun they could think of including HIV and also all test returned a normal response.

Hello Westhills,
Did you know that peripheral neuropathy is a common symptom of diabetes?  And I think it usually starts with burning in the feet.  You can actually see where it is burning because the nerve flairs up and the area is red.  Stop all the carbs, especially white carbs...yes, Atkins diet or a Glycemic Index diet and you might see quite an improvement right away.  And most important is to have yourself tested for diabetes.  If you have carb cravings and are overweight, I would bet dollars to doughnuts (oops!) that adult onset diabetes is your problem.  Apparently undetected diabetes is rampant in the US. It CAN be controlled through diet and even eliminated.  Taking insulin is not your first choice of treatment by a long stretch. Diet and lifestyle changes are THE way to go. Let me know how you are doing.
