Speechlessness and Unable to recognize

Hello,

My mother is 55 years old and have recently (2 weeks back) diagnosed for sodium level drop. Although now her sodium level is up to normal levels, she is having difficulty in recognizing people, and seems that she is too tired to talk. She did talk a few days back but the speech was slurry. But for the past 2-3 days, she has not only stopped talking, but is not also properly responding to external stimuli. She has never had a stroke, although she did regularly take medicines for high blood pressure and sleeplessness. She is a bit obese too.

The MRI findings reports
  • Mild hyperintensity on T2 Wl & FLAIR is seen in bilateral caudate and lentiform nuclei
  • Physiological calcification is seen in globus pallidii and in dentate neuclei
All other cases are said to be normal.

The MRI Impression reads:
  • Abnormal signal in caudate and lentiform nuclei. Possibilities are hypoxic / hypoglycaemic change / extrapontine myelinolysis.

The EEG report says there is no evidence of any obvious sharp paroxysmal activity.

What do you think could be the possible diagnosis and what do you suggest should be the best path to treating her?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your reply...

By the way, is her condition very serious? Is this is a common ailment?
