Spinal fluid pressure and a Pseudo Tumor

Spinal fluid pressure and a Pseudo Tumor

My wife was diagnosed with Pseudo tumor in early 1990's and had optic nerve docompression surgery.  For the last 10 years she has had a "swishing" in her ear. When it is really going, I can put my ear up to hers and hear it also.  She has had several spinal taps to check and release the spinal fluid pressure which is very high.  She is currently taking 1200mg of Acetazolamide which lessons the noise.  They have mentioned to her about putting in a shunt but she is very reluctant to do this.  Any suggestions or direction would be greatly appriciated.

I was also diagnosed with pseudotumor when I was 18.  I am now 26 and experiencing the same symptoms as you described.  My right ear had had a continuous swishing noise in it for the past 4 months and no doctor thinks there is anything wrong with me,  I was on acetazolamide when first diagnosed, but stopped when I became pregnant.  although i do not have any advice, it helps to know that I am not the only one who this is happening to.  Because of your post, I m going to contact my neurologist again to see what can be done.

Yeah whooshing in the ear is one of the annoying things us sufferers get.
Regarding the shunt thats something that your wife must decide on with your doctor, she has been taking medication for along time now and although Acetazolamide is a relatively `safe` drug, doctors seem to like offering you a shunt if you`ve had Psuedo for some years.
Personally if the meds are still doing a reasonable job of keeping the pressure down and your wife`s eye sight isn`t affected I`d be inclined to stay away from a shunt, but thats just me.
