Twitching

Hello everybody!

I'm a 21 year old man, who is experiencing muscle twitches over the last 3 weeks. It's especially in my right foot, but i also have it in my both calves and sometimes in my other foot. Sometimes the twitching is less than other days, but i feel it everyday. I'm very concerned about this, i'm very affraid of illnesses like ALS. I've seen my doctor and he says that it has to do with stress because i'm very stressed lately, and he does not think i should see a neurologist. He gave me valium to relax but it doesnt work. What should I do? Could stress really cause these fasciculations/twitches? And what can i do about it? I'm taking magnesium/calcium/zinc supplements but i see no difference. I'm very anxious/scared/stressed out.

PS: I'm sorry for my english, i'm dutch

Dear DrNoopurMD,

I would like to ask something about your first post. What makes you think it's not a neurological problem like ALS or maybe MS? These thoughts scare me alot, and I find it very hard not to have them.

Hi,

Muscle twitches do occur in CFS. Please read under the “neurological and cognitive manifestations” in the Wikipedia article on CFS.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_fatigue_syndrome
On an average 80% patients with CFS have muscle twitching so it is fairly common but does not occur in everybody. Hope this helps!

Dear DrNoopurMD,

First of all i want to say that i really appreciate you're comment. I've been googling for the CFS syndrome. Even though I've been very stressed out in the period before it began, fasciculations/twitchings are not mentioned as symptoms of CFS in the wikipedia article i've found. But I will surely discuss this with my doctor. Thanks for your tips, I will try to relax, but sometimes I get really freaked out because of the twitching.

If there are other people experiencing this, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
I can understand your concern and anxiety but as of now it does not seem to be a neurological problem like ALS.
There is a possibility that you are suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome which usually occurs after a viral infection. Other possibility is fibromyalgia which is although more common in women but can occur in men too. Both these conditions can cause muscle twitches. I would suggest you to discuss these possibilities also with your treating doctor.
In the meantime you can apply ice packs and make sure you are mentally relaxed.
Do keep us posted!
