What could be causing chronic scalp pain?

I have extreme scalp pain. It’s usually on the back/top of my head, and usually not the same day that I shower (although it has happened). Generally washing my hair helps, although I think it’s the water on the skin that soothes it more than anything.

It’s not an allergic reaction or a sensitivity. I’ve ruled that out. The skin is not inflamed, discolored, and does not have any sores. Everything looks completely normal, but some days I wake up with extreme pain. It hurts to wear my hair down, hurts to put it in a bun or pony tail, no matter what I do.

I am 24, female, and have a family history of Lupus, but I haven’t seen anything linking that to scalp pain. However, my mom and grandma both report feeling this pain as well.

Any experience?
