What is causing sudden jolting, stabbing pain on head, temple, and back of ears?

58 years old female, since 5 days ago, started having jolting, stabbing pain in the back of the head, accompanied by tightness and strain of neck. Went to the ER and doctor thought it was muscle strain but the pills given on muscle stress did not help at all. A few days later, the pain actually left the back of the head and now is hitting the right temple and behind the ears. The jolting pain comes without warning and the temple and behind the ears area do not hurt when touched. Besides this pain, everything else is normal - able to walk, work, see, and do everyday activities as usual. Please, any idea why? Any suggestion about what to do?
