I am a 70 yrs old female and have been diagnosed with cervical spondylosis. My doctor has asked me to go for the surgery asap ans said that is all that can be done in my condition. Pls see my mri scan report as below. Is there anything else that could be done or is the surgery the only option for me?
Report: the study shows deffuse bulges/osteophyte complxes from C4-C5 to C6-C7 level moderate to severely compressing the cord and narrowing bilateral neural foramen (max at C6-C7 level)
T2W hyperintense signals are seen within the cervical cord C6-C7 level suggestive of compressive myelopathic changes.
Dorsal bulges of L1-L2 to L3-L4 discs are seen which along with facet hypertrophy are causing central spinal canal stenosis (max at L3-L4 level) spodylosis.
Osteophytes are seen involving the spine
Spinal curvature is altered.
Remaining discs do not show any significant bulge.
Vertebrae show normal height
No evidence of pre spinal collections.
thanks and appreciare your advise
Hi there. The guidelines are once frank myelopathy occurs, surgical intervention is necessary. The primary goal is to decompress the spinal cord thus allowing more room for neural elements. Recent advances anterior approaches to the spine have been used. Through an anterior cervical approach, one can directly address and remove osteophytes and disc material for decompression of the spinal cord. Bone grafts and cervical plates to promote cervical fusion can prevent development of neck instability.
Your MRI report shows cervical myelopathy, spinal cord compression, which needs surgical intervention as advised by your neurosurgeon. Physical therapy, pain killers etc have adjuvant role. Hope this helps. Take care.
