collapsed right ventricle

by oaanders, May 17, 2009 08:05PM
My daughter is 3 years old and has hydrocephalus. She had a shunt installed when she was 6 months. This shunt has 18 settings and was set on 70. The shunt worked well, but the surgeons thought it was working a little too good and decided to adjust the pressure. The shunt would not adjust. The doctors then decided to leave it as is. This worked fine for 3 years. My daughter began to suffer headaches and vommiting. We took her too the hospital and they performed some tests (CT) A valve replacement procedure was performed and the setting was boosted to 120.

This brought on severe headaches and vommiting. After 24 hours of this,  the shunt was programmed down to 90. This provided partial relief and the vommiting subsided. We have had her home for 2 days now. She continues to have pain, but it is managable with Tylenol. She is easily fatigued and complains of being"very tired" She also is very irritable.

Question:
1. Is my surgeon trying to expand her collasped ventricle?

2. Do I need to bring her back to the hospital now, or is this what can be expected during this process?

3. Can a surgery installing a shunt oin a different ventricle solve this issue?

Regards,

Concerned Father
