Thanks Gregg. The DR originally told him the blood pocket may dry up on its own, and vision return to normal; or a laser procedure could be done but would probably cause a permanent gray spot in the field of vision.
My husband is RIDICULOUS for not seeking medical attention. He's an ER nurse!! But he has always been super stupid about seeking medical attention for himself.
Thank you for your comment, helps alot.
When blood mixes with brain fluid, it will make a person vomit, and the blood loss alone can be deadly. For example, in burst brain aneurysms, which is when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds, a person vomits all over the place, eventually passes out, and usually dies within 24 hours from brain damage from blood mixing with brain fluids, and from the clot pushing on the brain, and also blood loss.
But with your husband, it's the small pocket of blood next to his optic nerve that has apparently burst and is bleeding, so I don't think he will lose enough blood to die. But it is dangerous to have a bleed mixing with brain fluid, which caused the vomiting, and in fact, with this abnormality being so close to his vision center, he could lose ALL vision in that eye. For the life of me, I cannot understand why a doc didn't suggest surgery or other treatment for that abnormality long ago since it is so close to his eye and since he actually lost some vision on account of it.
So, there is no question that he must go to the ER now, or, at the very least, get a squeeze-in appointment to visit THIS WEEK his eye doctor who diagnosed this optic nerve problem, to see how bad the situation has become. Since he is reluctant to visit any doc, I'd tell him if he won't go with you to the ER right now, then tell him if he has any further symptoms whatsoever, that 9-1-1 will have to be called on him, and advise him you are going to notify his work to do the same thing. Keep us posted.
