neuropathy diagnosis, any suggestions?

by Danterrycol, Jun 18, 2007 05:51PM
I am looking for any advice or suggestions on my potential conditions.  I am 37.  I have had calve facsiculations for about five years and recently facsiculations moved to my upper legs, hands and arms.  I have had general muscle atrophy in the legs and arms over the last year, but nothing severe.  I had some slight random burning sensations in one part of my leg recently.  Other than that, I am OK. I am seeing a Neurologist who is running tests.  He says my strength is OK.  My blood tests were normal (including Magnesium and other blood tests percribed by the Neurologist).  My lower spinal MRI was OK. I passed the EMG but just failed the NCV showing polyneuropathy (both arms and legs with symmetry).  My doctor thinks it is a hereditary polyneuropathy (like CMT since I have hammertoes and high arches) and is arranging genetic testing to try to ID the disorder.  Any advice?  After searching online, I have not seen facsiculation symptoms tied to many polyneuropathies, especially CMT.  Facsiculations are really my only symptom aside from the failed NCV (no numbness or pain).  Also, I had a youth leg disorder (Leggs-Perthes Disease) so I have a limp and some lower-back pain.  Could a polynueropathy (in legs and arms) be due to a pinched nerve / disc problem?  The doctor did not seem to think this was an issue.  Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan,

I've had similar symptoms with the same type of progression of twitches from calves (for about a year) then to upper body - going on 2 years with symptoms. I have high arches and hammertoes too - though the neuro testing me didn't push the CMT concern too much when there was no noted hereditary connection. Since my NCV was also a little slower than expected for my age (40) my diagnosis was peripheral neuropathy with facsiculations.

Would be interested to hear more on your ongoing experience as our's seem quite similar.
