numbness spasms in upper palate gums

I have been getting attacks of numbness in my left upper gums (toward the back of the gums) and in the upper palate of my mouth. I went to a neuroligists and he told me I had Trigeminal Nueralgia (spelling ?). He prescribed Gabapetin 100 mg 2 capsules  3 times a day and advised it should help.  These spells make me sick when I have them and even cause me to have an upset stomack and make me feel weak. They come and go and I have no warning of when the attacks are going to happen. I do not get pain and I thought Trigeminal Nueralgia caused pain. I have not found where  numbness/spasms (that is how I describe what I feel) are part of Trigeminal Nueralgia. I had an MRI and nothing of concern was found. I have had this problem for 8 years now and I wish there was something I could do to get it to stop. Symptoms will happen for days in a row at times and at times I won't get symptoms for couple of weeks.  Anybody have any thoughts. I don't want to doubt my doctor. I gusess I am just wishing there was something I could do to get them to completely go away.

Thanks

I have not had an injury that I could think of. The only thing that even comes to mind is when I had dental work about 10 years ago; the dentist hit a nerve in the upper palate with a needle. It cause pain at the time but went away. I have went to everybody but a dentist for the problem.  I thought it could be an artery problem or something, but all the doctors have told me the symptoms do not indicate a blood flow problem. I will go to a dentist to see what they think.

Hi,

Did you suffer from injury to your teeth or mouth?
The mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve supplies the gums and palate. Numbness indicates compression of some of the terminal nerve branches. The reason for compression has to be looked into. I would suggest you to consult an experienced dentist and seek his opinion.
