oxycontin withdrawls

my husband had his stomach removed in 06 due to cancer he now and has for a while suffered from nerve damage well he has been on his share of pain meds but for the last 3 months he has been taking another prescription it is called 80 mg oxycontin but now he has gotten to the point were he said he would rather deal with the pain than take any more oxycontin he doesnt like the way they make him feel now and he wants to stop taking them but we have read so much on the internet about withdrawls that he wants to know if there is anything he can do to avoid them the withdrawls that is any suggestions would be sincerly appreciated
