"pins and needles" sensation in lower back

I have been haveing sever "pins and needles " sensation in my lower back, usually with what I thought was hot flashes.  I get very hot, starting in my lower back and moving up my spinal cord.  The pins and needles feel like hundreds of tiny needles are bing inserted in my lower back, at times so painful that it takes my breath away.  It lasts for a couple of minutes and then goes away.  Some days this only happens once and on others it may happen several times in the course of the day.  Is this part of menopause or something else.

I woke up one night in Mar 09 with a severe headache (which I never had), having to urinate every 5 mins, felt extremely hot, back pain, and hundreds of pins and needles sticking from the bottom of my torso to both thighs stopping at the knees.  Since then I had MRI indicating MS but Neuro guy said I didn't have placed on 3 different meds for headache which did work (stopped in June).  Headaches felt like streaks of lighting shooting on the top of my head and I felt the heat. Last episode of pins and needles which moved to arms and legs was in August.

Does the pain only go up and down the spine or does it radiate out along the skin to your side? Do you have problems with the feeling in your feet?

I ask because that is something I'm having trouble with.  I got a ?Diagnosis? from my neurologist but I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the answer.
