protruding disc

I recently had an MRI after waking up to extreme pain in my left arm.  My Dr. advised me that I have a protruding disc. between cervical 5-6.

He suggested surgery initially - but I opted for other options.   However on reading on this subject and talking to many people who have previously suffered through this,  I'm beginning to wonder if surgery -while the (injury) is new and not hardened (if thats possible) is a much better plan - than years of pain management and then still needing surgery down the road.

I'm wondering if this makes any sense - and what the worst possible outcome could be -
thanks
