You need to stop "mentally checking." That is the worst thing a person with OCD can do. It just makes the situation worse. Try very, very hard not to go there. Stop trying to prove or disprove your irrational thought because it is just that, an irrational thought that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Right when the thought even begins, mentally picture a red handle and you pulling it back with your hand toward you and say STOP in your head...or even outloud. You need to stop yourself so that it doesn't bloom and take on a life of its own.
