Should I take medication for OCD or try meditation and natural ways first?

I have been suffering from OCD since childhood. Yesterday, I finally gathered the courage to go to a psychiatrist when a particular thought was getting too obsessive. It is basically a false memory of I swearing on my mom that I won't talk to my girlfriend and that is making me break-up with her. My mind tells me I sweared on her that I won't talk to my GF. The doctor has given Daxid 50mg and Naptril 0.25mg. I can't afford the side effects of these medications as I am going through an important stage of my career. Should I take them or first try meditation and natural foods for increasing serotonin levels or can they be taken without worry? Will I develop a habit of them?

Daxid is a SSRI not unlike what ocdhelp is taking (Prozac).  I'm not sure what Naptril is.  Honestly I take medication and it does make the world of difference.  It also helps, as ocdhelp has said, to have learned CBT as well for those times that OCD thoughts "break through" a bit.

Hi,
I've had OCD since April 2015. I tried meditation and eating foods that increase serotonin levels, but it honestly didn't help me. I started taking Prozac in July 2015 and I was so much better by September 2015. The side effects I noticed were initially losing weight and just recently, starting this month, gaining a little weight. But my focus has improved tremendously. Of course, I still have some days where the OCD starts to come back due to stress or changes in hormone but I have to say that i have definitely had more ups than downs now. I changed jobs in October 2015 and am thankful that I'm more focused now and happier. This is just my experience with the medication. I also did a lot of meditation while taking the meds and worked with my therapist on cbt. I read books about OCD that are recommended on this forum. I also listen to hypnosis for OCD podcasts that help me fall asleep in a few minutes :). A combination of all of these things have helped me but everything bed experiences are different.
