is zoloft safe

My daughter was just diagnosed with trichotillomania, and her pediatrician wants to put her on Zoloft 25 milligrams.  My husband is very adament about her not taking medication, and feels that the therapy will be enough.  He is afraid of the side effects and the long term  effects of her taking medication.  I am afraid for her not to.  I want her to have every opportunity to fight this, but want to be safe at the same time.  Can you give me some insight?

Thank You
Angie

That dose sounds awfully small but as far as safety is concerned, it's not that bad. I've taken worse medications. It does have some side effects and I'm not certain about long term effects. I'd ask your daughter how she feels. If she believes she can cope with the symptoms while she's in therapy then give that a shot but if the symptoms are overwhelming her to the point she's not functioning well, then the medication is the best route at least for the short term
