Makata, only a doctor can tell you if you need surgery. As I said earlier, recovery usually involves RICE, and it will take as long as your body needs. The pain and swelling will go down. At that time, you might consider physical therapy to help strengthen your leg muscles, and further reduce inflammation.

My son had the ACL repair surgery only to blow out his new ACL within a year, again playing football -- he was on a football scholarship. That was about 10 years go. Today, he's an airline pilot and uses that leg every day to control the rudder pedals of a jetliner, so the lack of an ACL does not impair his normal functioning.

The fitted orthopedic knee brace permits him activities like bike riding and volleyball. He also does a lot of weight training to keep the muscles in his leg strong. He doesn't need the brace all the time, but only when he is doing activities that stress the knee. The brace prevents hyperextension of that knee joint and prevents further injury.

Please note, I am not a doctor and am not offering medical advice, but only my personal opinion. Please consult your doctor if you have questions about treatment or care.

Best wishes for a fast recovery.

Thanks a lot for your valuable information.  This happened when I fell from bike. Do I need a surgery for quick recovery?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments of the knee, and resists forward movement of the tibia.

If this is a new injury, treat with RICE -- rest, ice, compression, and elevation. NSAIDs can help with pain and swelling, although, always take NSAIDs with food.

My son destroyed an ACL playing football -- he lives a normal life without one, but uses an orthopaedic knee brace when he runs or plays sports.
