Dilated pupils

A few months ago I noticed that my left pupil was large in dimmed light, and the right was normal.  The left pupil would become huge.  Sometimes they would both be normal, sometimes they would not.  Since three days ago, they're either both dilated or the left one is big and the right one is normal.

I have other problems, I'm getting auras around things that are light.  I am getting strange headaches, like a pressure sensation above my nose on my forehead in the centre, but it last a few minutes.  I get blocked sinuses a lot.  I really struggle to breathe through my nose.  I'm also on beta blockers for inappropriate sinus tachycardia and I also have an irregular rhythm - the heart thing started in April last year when I funnily enough had some kind of viral infection in my sinuses and throat.

I have also had muscle weakeness - general, wasting and weight loss too.  I have had many tests and they THINK it's M.E./ CFS because all blood work was normal.  I was healthy until i had a baby last Dec, I have been getting sick and worse since the birth.

I had severe pain in my hips and lower back, a burning sensation in my coccyx and trouble walking for a few weeks after the birth, I noticed that my coccyx is bent over to one side now.  Can spinal injury from giving birth cause neuro symptoms?

I started after that, after the pain with tingling and numbness in my pelvic area spreading down my legs, it would happen intermittently, and then I started getting generalised itching, like a crawling sensation, then I got the pins and needles in my hands and arms, I'd sometimes wake up with it all down my arms really bad, especially if I have been lying on the sofa.  I had an x ray of my neck which was normal, but they said it looked like I had whiplash because my neck muscle was like a tightrope.  I lost a lot of weight, my muscles wasted a little, and I developed a sinus tachyarrythmia and very high blood pressure.

I've been refused neuro referral because I passed the neuro exam with the doctor because in August when I noticed the pupil differences.

Reaction wise - they both react to daylight equally, they will also constrict when I switch the big light on.  But in dimmed light, or if i have been drinking alcohol, they can either be unequal with the left huge and the right normal, or both huge.  I am also getting sharp pain above my cheek on the left side near my temple which lasts a couple of mins and I get that a couple of times a day for the past week.

Can injury to the lower spine through giving birth cause neuro symptoms?  Whatever has happened it has affected my nervous system and has caused over activity of the sympathetic nervous system (?), i.e. there was nothing wrong with the heart it is something to do with the signal from the brain to the heart causing the tachyarrythmia.

I have many of the symptoms you describe as well and spent several months without a diagnosis. The doctor's checked for cancer, MS, RA, OA, and many other deases. They ultimately found Fibromyalgia. You might want to look into this as it is typically more prevalent in women than in men and occurs during child bearing years. I have actually read before that some women can develop it after pregnancy. It can cause pretty much everything you describe. While it is not fun to deal with; it is not degenerative like other diseases or conditions. Hope this helps.

Have you resolved the mystery of the dilated pupil. I have the same thing. Sometime its dilated, sometimes it isn't. Always responsive to light and no other neurologicical or opthalmological symptoms. Seen the specialists! Sometimes my eye aches and becomes a bit red, especially when I'm tired at the end of the day. My vision however is totally uneffected. This has been going on for more than a year now and hasn't got any worse. The opthalmologist said its probably a physiological anisocoria which is nothing to worry about but there is always that worry without having had a scan.

Hi,
How was your scan? Has there been any conclusion?

Hi,
How are you feeling? When is your scan planned?
Unequal pupil size, this may be a benign physiologic variant or it can also be a manifestation of disease.
It can be due to an abnormality in the musculature of the iris or there would some abnormal innervations of parasympathetic or sympathetic pathways.
Any space occupying lesion which causes 3rd nerve to compress can cause unequal pupils.
I think in your case it might be physiological as you are having these symptoms from quiet long with no other associated symptoms.
Keep me informed.
Bye.

I have a question I hope somebody can help me with.
I am a 22 year old female, have always been healthy except for iron deficiency which has caused me to feel dizzy all throughout my life up until now. 2 days ago my husband noticed my left pupil was a lot bigger than the right one. I looked this up online and found that it could be a symptom of a serious condition (e.g. brain tumor) and went to the doctor, who told me I have to have a CAT scan done somewhere next month (long wait) to rule out anything serious. I asked her whether she thought it would be something serious and all she said is "let's hope not". I went home quite upset but my husband told me he had seen it before and even 2.5 years ago (when we first met) already. I looked at pictures and sure enough my left pupil is almost always bigger (the only time they are both the same size is when there is a lot of light).
My question is, should I be worried now? My other "complaints" are dizzyness and pressure in my head but I've had that for years and years and was always told that was iron deficiency.
Thanks a lot for answering, it would be nice to put this in perspective and not be so scared anymore.
Kind regards,
Romy

Hi Venusi,
I think you have described your condition in a clear way.
I would like to say that it is normal to find pupils unequal sometimes in a day especially when there are no other neurological symptoms.
It is indeed right that you might have visual problems when you are on Beta-blockers.
Spinal disc pathology of lower back cannot cause heart rate disturbance.
Since you don’t have pain of lower back, it does not go against lower back pathology. It might be just too early to think of it.
I think you should be consulting neurologist at earliest and get an imaging done for your spine.
I think we can come close to diagnosis by getting imaging study done.
Keep me informed; I would be interested to know your decision.
Bye.

Hi there, thanks for your message.  I have not seen a neuro, I tried to arrange it with my doctor but my doctor says that I have anxiety because everything else was ruled out blood wise.

What I would say is that the eyes can alternate, and they are not dilated all of the time, some evenings I can walk into the bathroom, put the light on and they both look normal, other times they're both dilated and other times one eye is dilated and the other one normal.  I do get visual problems which I have been told are a side effect of beta blockers.  I have had all sorts of visual problems since being on the beta blockers, and admittedly the dilation thing has occured since going onto them.

I will say that when I climb the stairs at home I ache like mad in the legs and feel exhausted.  I don't have back pain though, however, I did have severe lower back pain a couple of months after giving birth, and of course, like I mentioned before, the tingling down my pelvis and legs.  I still have the heart rate problems.  I do know that when my beta blocker wears off my heart rates automatically.

I have also started getting bloating in my stomach after eating and a lot of reflux and burping.  My temp varies a lot, on a cold day when I'm indoors it can be about 34 degrees C and normally around 35.4 degrees, higher just before and during my period (as i wondered if all of this is post natal hormone troubles)  I had my hormones tested and my thyroids were fine but my LH and FSH were both elevated (but that was just before my period) but I do get a lot of down below probs since the birth.

This is quite horrible to say, but I do know that when I gave birth my husband claimed that i virtually turned inside out (as it appeared) and I tore badly.  I also did bend my coccyx.

It is possible it could be my spine, but I would love to know if spinal injury/disc injury can cause changes in heart rythmn.  And, surely, if I had hurt my spine, would I not be experiencing back pain?  I have no pain apart from the aching from mild exertion - I do pull muscles easily now too, carrying shopping is very painful to my neck and shoulders and lifting my son now is painful.  So I tell a lie, I am in pain when I am lifting or climbing stairs, mainly in my arms, shoulders, neck and legs.

Hi,
How are you feeling now? Do you have any other associated symptoms like headache, blurring of vision etc?
You had asked can spinal injury from giving birth cause neuro symptoms.
Yes it can cause tingling, numbness and pain along lower limbs.
I think the answers lies in getting a MR scan done of your spine.
Have you consulted a neurologist so far? If yes, what he has to say about your symptoms and imaging study.
I think you have some spinal disc pathology.
I would be interested to know about your symptoms progression and treatment.
Bye.

Have you ever found out what was causing this ??  I have about the exact symptoms and all tests come back ok also.  My left eye dilates and right one stays normal.  Tingling in face around left lip.  I have been diagnoised with a herniated disk in neck but doctor says that should not cause these symptoms.  All tests like Cat scan   MRI/MRA all normal and blood work normal.  Lewt me know and hope tyou feel better.
