Hairline fracture

Greetings,

I've suffered from a "hairline" fracture in my navicular bone for over 6years, which ended my carrer in football. Due to monetary conditions  at the time, I left it untreated. Recently I attended an orthopaedic clinc, and there I was told about my condition. The doctor at the time, through MRI scans, said I had 2 options, cortisone injection for the pain or an operation that would assure me a 50/50 chance of recovery or get worse.
My question is, can I still recover from this limitaion with no surgery or cortisone? I am 24 years old now and I can walk and run with no problem (only with the changing of seasons I feel the pain from time to time).
