compound fracture tibia

Hi Iam a 40 year old male recovering from 2 ops on a broken leg due to a fall from a ladder. I broke both bones in my shin just above my ankle. I have had plates and screws inserted to the fractures. What i would like to know is it safe to take Vitamin K and Lysine as i would like to heal the bones asap. I read on the net that takng Vitamin K with Warfarin mite not be wise.I was given Warfarin injections while in Hospital but have been given 2X 75mg of asparin and 2x Diclofenac Sodium while recovering at home. Iam eating a balanced diet and iam a non smoker. I woul like any information on the best way to heal bones and muscle.

Thanks
Ian....

Hi,
I think plastic surgery should be fine; it won't come in the way of your fracture recovery.
What have the doctor's planned for your rehabilitation? I mean to say have they involved physiotherapist, pain management specialist and occupational therapist for your planned recovery?
After suffering from a major injury, if a treatment is planned involving multi-specialty doctor’s,  addressing to different needs of patient involving psychological consultation, the results are better and faster.
You need to keep informing about your progress to your surgeon as well as physical therapist.
Bye.

Thanks for the reply C. I think ill give the vitamin K a miss but i think i will take some Lysine to aid with bone groth. I attended hospital yday to have the cast removed and some of the stitches from the surgery removed. They said i mite need some plastic surgery on the exit point where the bones came out the ankle, they had to remove some of the flesh and it was difficult to stitch. The accident was approx 4 weeks ago. as i live in Scotland the salmon wont be a problem to get as we have the best in the world.....Ha pity i cant get out to catch it for myself. Ill let you know how i get on.

Thanks
Ian.

Hi Ian,
How are you feeling now?
Ian you have to understand two things that Vitamin K is a pro-coagulant and Warfarin is an anti-coagulant. Hence if you are taking both at present, then you need to discuss this issue with your PCP.
There are lots of healthy diets which will help you in making your bones stronger.
You should take lot of calcium rich food like Non fat yogurt, Collard Greens, Pink Salmon (canned with bones), Skim Milk, Calcium Fortified Orange Juice, Almonds, Turnip Greens, Soy Beans and Broccoli among others.
You should be walking around and eating foods which are rich in Vitamin D and Calcium.
About Lysine, it is an amino acid that helps in the absorption of calcium. Lysine a protein building block, can increase the amount of calcium absorbed into the matrix according to Peter Furst, M.D.,PhD. in the Jan./Feb. 1993, Nutrition (9: 70-2).
You can take diet rich in Vitamin C as it is a bone healer.
It’s a good that you are a non-smoker which makes healing as a process in body faster.
I don't think you should be taking Vitamin K when you are on Aspirin for the reason mentioned above.
Keep me informed about your health and well being.
Bye.
