Post ORIF to distal tibia is my pain caused by surgical screws being too long?

Hi, I had ORIF Surgery after breaking my tibia through a fall from height. Recovery was progressing slowly but surely until recently when I have started experiencing increasing pain in the ankle which is often hard to pinpoint. A few months ago when my cast was removed I realised that I could feel the tips of 3 screws protruding from my shin bone, one of these is low on the shin in between the 2 tendons which allow you to raise your toes towards your shin. It feels like it protrudes about 5mm from the bone into the soft tissue. I am concerned that this screw is aggravating nerves which pass through the area and may be causing a lot of my current pain. So I guess my questions are:

Does this seem plausible?
Why would the screws used have been so long as to protrude into the soft tissue?

Many thanks for reading, and please ask if further details would be useful.
