I fought for four plus years to find a doctor that would listen to me because all my tests (MRIs, x-rays, EMG's) all came back normal. I finally found a foot and ankle specialist that listened to me (he was my third). I used crutches off and on for those four plus year.
He did surgery because he said my ligaments were chronically stretched and I had a pinched nerve due to a herniated muscle (which is common with sprains but no one ever thinks to look). I feel so much better.
Don't give up keep looking for a doctor who will listen.

Hi there!
Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of your ankle pain. Possibilities that may need to be considered include inflammations, degenerations, stress fractures, injuries to muscles/ ligaments/ tendons, neuro-muscular causes, vascular issues etc. An x-ray might not be able to pick-up soft tissue causes. I would suggest considering an evaluation by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
Hope this is helpful.
Take care!
