ankle surgery

I have had ankle pain for years and no dr. could ever really tell me what the problem is.  Finally this last year my dr. did an MRI and said I have chronic instability and need ligament reconstruction surgery.  Is this is a common surgery?  Should I see a surgeon who specializes in ankle surgeries?  What kind of recovery can I expect?  At the time of my MRI they recommended I wear a good ankle brace.  It has been a big help as it keeps the swelling down.  I have taken IBU for years to help with the pain. But I'm ready to proceed with surgery and I don't want to just go to anyone and I guess I want to know that this surgery is going to help significantly.  Any advice or someone else's experiences would be appreciated.

Hi,
How are you? Ankle surgery is done by a orthopedician. You can ask an advise of your local physician about which orthopedician in your near by town is good in doing these surgeries. Physical therapy after the cast is removed is a must, a physiotherapist can help you in this.
Take care

Thank you for your response. It is very helpful.  Can you tell me if this can be done by a general orthopod or if you would recommend a someone specializing in foot surgery?   If I leave it to my local physician they will just send me to the othopod in the next large town as we are in a rural area and I'm not comfortable with that.  Thanks again for you help!!!

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Ankle instability can occur due to twisting of the ankle causing damage to the ligaments and tendons in the ankle. Surgery is considered only if conservative measures fail. There are two methods of surgical correction depending upon the damage to the ankle. They are ligament tightening procedure and tendon graft procedure.
After surgery, cast or brace is placed for about six weeks to allow the reconstruction to heal. Following removal of the cast, physical therapy will be required to regain full use of the ankle. Full recovery can be expected in 6 months.
All the best.
