injured knucke

while working in the basement at work, I reached into a box and hit my hand pretty hard right on the knuckle of my right hand, middle finder.  This happened in November. I figured the bruise and soreness would heal.  It is Decmeber 23, and it occasionary will re-bruise and become painful again.  I find no particular reason why it just all of sudden bruiese again and hurts.  (I did not punch anything, but that is what the knuckle at the base of the figner on my looks hand implies. It is strange that it will be fine and then keep re-bruising. Suggestions? could it be fractured?  If so, what can be done?

p.s. I think they can do surgery on this type of injury, like stick pins in to hold stuff together. I am in my mid-50's so I guess my bones were getting brittle, either that or my hands just aren't as strong as they used to be years ago when I was in construction... ya think??? LOL, is yours in the big knuckle that is part of the main hand or is it out in the actual finger? Mine is the big one.

Hey I am having a similar problem although mine was (I think) caused by using this big old staple gun that has a ridge on the handle that makes it uncomfortable as hell to use. After about 3 weeks of gradually worsening pain I had an x-ray. It shows a fracture to the 5th metacarpal. I have an appt. with the orthopedic doc, but not till after the holidays... Yeeouch!
