10 years of pain is worth getting an evaluation from a physiatrist (physical medicine & rehabilitation) doctor.  They're experts in non-surgical remedies of chronic pain like this.

I am 44 years old female.I have lived with such pain which you have described. My pain in between the shoulder blades started in 1994 and did attend physio at that time who told me that i have young children to look after thats why i am getting lots of aches and pain in my spine. In sep 2006 I had full hystrectomy due to having endometriosis(hormonal condition) and  I found my self in a great deal of pain in my spine legs and in knees.. took all sorts of pain killers ,nothing worked. Arranged xrays on my upper spine, left hip and for both knees.,In Jan 2007 been diagnosed of Osteoathritis in my Thoracic spine, hip and in both knees. Also arranged an MRI for my lumbar spine as the pain shoots down my both legs through buttocks.Found some degenerative discs in my lumbar but there is no slipped disc and nerve root is not damaged.

It is worth having an oridinary xrays on your spine to rule out an athritis.
best wishes

I am a 27 year old female. I first felt this pain a few years back when I sneezed and was unable to move my neck and my upper body for a full day. Recently this pain has come back. The description of trying to touch your ear to your shoulder is PERFECT. That movement causes great discomfort in the area between my shoulder blades. It feels like a pulling directly on my spine. It also happens when I turn my neck far to each side. While sitting idle I can feel a low burning at the spot of discomfort. I was an athlete in college, specifically softball and soccer. Needless to say (being a center fielder and goal keeper) I dove A LOT. Is there any rehab I can do at the gym, or should I get myself checked out by a physician. In desperate need of advice! :(
Thanks!

I am a 47 Year old male, military, who has always prided myself as staying in shape, 5' 11", 175lbs.  Last year in October I lifted a heavy object, and three hours later this pain started just as described above.  Between my shoulder blades, but at the time of first incident I also got a sever muscle knot in my left neck, with tingling up the left side of the face, even my left eye hurt.  I have had a complete X-Ray of my spine, and an MRI of the head and C-Spine to include T-1, both came out negative with normal disc spacing and no mis-aligned discs.  So I dealt with this for 5 Months, and a friend recommended I see a Chiropractor.  I did, and the adjustment did help, but noticed that the relief is only short lived.  I'm not thrilled at the idea of a lifetime of chiro adjustments to keep the pain under control.  I am looking into physical therapy now to see if there is any exercises I can do to help strengthen the muscles to help stablize the area.  I would be interested in learning of anyone who has successfully recovered from such symptoms.  I need to get back in shape to continue to lead my men.  Thanks, my email is ***@****

I am a 59yr old woman, still suffering with hot flashes and night sweats and now for about a year, I have been experiencing this horrible pressing sensation (rather than pain) in my back (between shoulder blades that radiates out in a circular pattern and then alternates with pressing chest discomfort.........It is not pain, but excruciating pressure, like a big truck or heavy something is pressing into my back.........It last for hours, usually starting at 3am and going til 7am.  I thought it maybe indigestion, but I tried not eating or drinking anything after 5pm...Can something else be suffering this kind of misery also..

I also am having severe pain inbetween my shoulder blades and was informed that I have to compression fractures of my spine. I can accept that diagnosis, but it's the breathing problems that cause me to panic. I am now on anxiety medication to help with the anxiety attacks. It seems as if I have to stretch my back apart in order to take a deep breath.
Is this common for my sort of medical problem. Also, when I begin to have these problems, my blood pressure rises. Is this because I am panicking?
I can go for months feeling pretty good, and then all at once the pain starts, with the burning sensation, and pain usually on the left side between my shoulder blades.
The doctor put me on Soma last year, but it seems that it isn't working that good anymore.

Thank you,

Olga

20 female, back pain, crackig inbetween shoulder blades, I first went to physio and got some strenthening exercises and now I am in massage where he tries to massage some of the myofacia which causes cracking out. has been controlling pain. I think the most important thing is to exercise those muscles properly, I'm going to join swimming to strenthen them. hope you get better and I hope that my back doesn't hurt for 10 years.

I have been having the same type of pain. The pain is torture in the morning. I have been seeing an Orth. Dr. who has had an MRI done of my spine but nothing was found. I recently had a Catscan done of my chest but nothing found that would indicate why I'm having this pain. The pain is right between my shoulder blades and I tell the doctor I feel as if the pain were on my bone. I will be starting Physical Therapy for what she says looks like a swollen muscle. I just hope that will help. The pain is so bad sometimes I just wish I would die. I have been to the ER twice in 1 month because the pain medicine they were giving me wasn't doing nothing for me. I have now been taking Ultram which is helping. But lately the pain is sill there. Not bad but still there.

I have had similar pain for 3 years. i'm 26 years old and doesn't want to think about living like this forever. i've been diagnosed w/scrapping scapula and thoracic outlet syndrom (syndrome). scrapping scapula can cause major pain in the shoulder blade area. i had a small procedure and had mine scrapped(scar tissue removed) and i do feel better. it still bothers me at times but not near like it did. good luck to all..

Sharp muscle knots in between my shoulder blade and spine occur almost on a regular basis for me. It happens when I'm under alot of pressure/stress or may have slept wrong? It's a great thing my best friend is a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy). One night, I asked him what a GOLF BALL was doing on his floor, he doesn't even play golf. His response, "to get rid of the tight muscle knots I have in my back." Amazed! Now wheneever I have a knot in my back (like I do right now) all I do is roll on a golf ball and it INSTANTLY removes the knot on my back. I LOVE IT!!! Unfortunately I have been to massage therapists who made the problem only WORSE. The stiffness moved up into the base of my neck! It was the most excruciating pain ever felt. I guarantee, the golf ball rounded stiff edges will dig deep into that painful muscle releasing pressure from within.  Having knots in your back is a huge burden. Can't comfortably move on with life. I hope this helps you all!

I have pain between my shoulder blades and tightness and popping in my back and chest for 10 years now. I am 30 yrs old and have been to the physical therapist and chiropractor also for this problem. I noticed the problem started when I was around 20 years old when I first started working at a job where I was at a computer all day. I went to my doctor and they sent me to a physical therapist who taught me excercises to help strengthen the muscles between my shoulder blades which they said needed to be strengthened to hold your head up all day. Next I went to a chiropractor which said that my spine around my neck was sloping forward instead of in the natural back position which can cause spasms in the area between the shoulder blades. I did the treatment for a while and he gave me a device that I hung my head off that would slowly pull my neck back into position. I will say that I never really gave the excercises that the therapist gave me or the device the chiropractor gave me a full chance so give it a try. I did notice that stress and certain anxiety like meeting deadlines kinda makes the area tighten up and start to hurt. I can take deep breathes and my back and sternum will pop like crazy. I can make it pop like every 5 seconds. I have worked out all my life and I thought that over working my body and chest could have caused this. I have noticed lately that actually running on the treadmill will make the muscles between my shoulders kinda sore. So I started working out the muscles between my shoulders with very light weight (like my therapist said) and making sure I ran or walked on the treadmill every time I worked out and this helped out alot and also making sure to breathe correctly when working out helps. I believe that this hurting could be a cause of being on a computer for so long everyday, a little anxiety and tension and that we need to concentrate on the muscles that hold up the neck and head. I have noticed that when I'm on vacation or not at work the pain is not as intense. Try working these muscles while taking deep breathes and running, jogging, or excercising on a treadmill and hopefully this will help. (visit a therapist so they can pin point the exact muscles, I don't know the scientific names of the muscles).

just wanted to update everyone!!! Back in 08 i went to a specialist about this pain between my shoulders. I had x-rays and a MRI both came up negative. The dr. told me to try to strengthen  my back and NSAIM for pain. But since then my back has kinda healed. I still get a flair up here and there but nothing like it was before 08.
In all honestly i think the anxiety and stress for my back hurting made it hurt even more.
I also think i had a slight posture problem which i have corrected. shoulders back and chin tucked
All and all im doing pretty good and wanted to update everyone and thanks everyone for all the comments they have left and shared   (best regards to everyone )

I have also suffered with pain in my spin between my shoulder blades.  I saw an acupuncturist and they told me that it was likely do to my intake of sugar. I didn't believe them at first but decided to try it.  And it totally worked.  I recommend that  those who suffer from this condition to try eliminating refined sugar from your diet.

Hi, the pain between shoulder blades may be caused by a number of factors. The pain may be sourced from inflammation of the tissues or tendons surrounding the scapula or the shoulder blade. Although pain between shoulder blades may signal that there is something wrong with the tissues, joints, ligaments or muscles around and within the shoulder region. This may be caused by too much stress or too much time spent in front of the computer. This may also indicate a posture problem. You need a cervical X ray and probably MRI of shoulder joint. I hope this helps.

Could this be the reason?

Cultivated Genetically Modified Foods – From bacteria (E. coli) and fungus, fruits and vegetables to animals, genetic manipulation is becoming more and more common in our society. In the US market now, 60 to 70% of the processed foods are genetically modified. In 2006, United States GMO crops reached just shy of 135 million acres, with the total global area exceeding 250 million acres!¹

This is a short list of the genetically modified food crops that are grown in the US today:

•Sugar cane
•Sweet peppers
•Tomatoes
•Bananas
•Strawberries
•Soy bean
•Corn
•Potatoes
•Pineapples
•Cocoa beans
•Yellow squash
•Zucchini

I tried using a medicinal witch doctor, literally Sir. Turns out this remedy not only strengthens the Latisimas, dorsal, Trap of the affected area, but strengthens the Taris Major (affected area). This guy was a former wrestler and he told me that my skeletal frame was much too small for my muscular anatomy.I have obscenly big shoulders and back area. I did think he was crazy, however the nerves into and around this area became so "bunched up" they became chronic. My symptoms included a slight dull recognizable stab pain in between the Taris and my latisimas. This became more pronounced over a 24 hour period. Next day, sharp pain up in around my neck and dull, but sometimes blinding headache. Cure: Buy yourself a 10 to 15 lb hand weight. Sit at your chair with good posture and let the weight hang down. Do as much as you can take. Then repetitive sets of direct lift up and down-rest. Repeat as often as you need to get the relief you need and want, drink lots and lots and LOTS OF WATER all day. Get a good nights rest and next A.M. you should be good to go Sir.  The idea is to strengthen your pain. Feed your pain with exercise and mental alterness. Build yourself back strong. Hope you write back and let me know how it went.
